Have you ever looked up your home, school, or other place of interest on Google Maps, zoomed in, and exclaimed, “Hey! That’s not what it looks like now! Maybe you installed or removed a pool, or your neighbor’s old red barn burned down two years ago, and yet there’s the old view of the property. What’s up with that? Google Maps is not updated in real time or very frequently. In fact, in some places, maps can be years old! Many people have wondered how often Google Maps is updated and how to know when it will be updated next for a given location. This article discusses how Google Maps, Google Earth, and Google Street View work and how often they are updated.
Understanding Google Maps
Before we delve into how often Google Maps updates, it’s necessary to understand how it works, at least a little. Google Maps is part of the larger “Google Earth” program and is the most used part of Google Earth. Businesses, travel sites, and more attach maps to their websites to show their location and how to get there. Google Maps provides personalized directions to help you get to your destination.
Google Maps includes Google Earth images and adds streets and roads since that is its main purpose. Google Maps also zooms in wider than the Earth, down to small ps of a city. The closer you get, the more streets you see. The advanced imagery created by Google Earth, as discussed below, provides clear results when approaching specific roads. Although Maps does not display real images and shows images of road lines, it serves its purpose well. When is Google Maps updated?
Google does not have a set update schedule for Google Maps, and if it does, it does not publish that information. Anyway, the update frequency depends on which part of the world the empirical data collection is imaged from. Of course, several areas are imaged at the same time. In small, densely populated areas of the continental United States, updates occur on a weekly basis. For more isolated locations, the frequency could be as slow as every two months, years, or even longer. Anyway, the bottom line is that you can’t know when your area will update on Google Maps, although you can see where Street View will go next; more details on this later.
Smaller things, including examples like your new group, are not considered important enough for Google to update your content. This makes some sense, especially considering how frequently billions of people around the world change homes or backyards. After all, those areas are useless for travel needs.
Understanding Google Earth
Google Earth uses satellite photographs from NASA and the Landsat 8 satellites of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). These tools offer highly detailed views that cover almost the entire surface of the planet. Google accesses these images and uses a sophisticated algorithm to detect cloud cover and replace cloudy areas with previous images for an uninterrupted view of the world. All of this information is placed into a copy of Google Earth Engine, which processes all the data and creates the map.

Although you can’t get a specific schedule for when and where Street View will capture images from the ground, you can see the scheduled areas on a specific Google Maps Street View web page. This page is a good indicator of where Google Street View has been and where it’s going next. Here’s how to use it.

- Scroll down a little and you will see a p with the current month and year. Choose a country from dropdown options to see what Google will scan next using its specially equipped cars.
- Click Know more Break down the schedule further into specific areas, such as US cities.
The information provided only reaches the city level and the schedule includes a monthly range for each area. Anyway, Google Street View won’t tell you which parts of the city are scheduled to be updated, but at least you’ll see a general time period.
Other update features in Google Maps
Google added a feature in the past called “Location Sharing” that allows you to share your location with friends and track your friends in real time when they share their location with you. Google Maps also added content like built-in music player support (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.), a speedometer, and accident reporting to help make the platform more powerful than ever. These features are updated periodically.
