How to Fix Amazon Echo Dot Device Registration Error

Amazon’s family of home automation tools made a breakthrough in convenience, flexibility, and cost with the Echo Dot. The Dot is basically a voice-controlled microcomputer with a network connection and a sophisticated audio interface with the familiar voice of the Alexa app. The recent third-generation version of the Dot turned an already useful platform into an excellent multimedia solution by massively upgrading the built-in speaker. For anyone who isn’t an audiophile, the Dot’s new speaker is quality enough to use as a main speaker for listening to music in any casual listening environment, such as an office or bedroom.

The Dot has been very well received in the tech-savvy market. Its popularity is particularly impressive given that the home assistant market is quite new. There are now millions of Echo devices around the world, helping us play music, turn lights on and off, know the weather, or tell us what the traffic will be like on the way to work. But what happens if it doesn’t work correctly? How do you solve it without pulling out your hair? As good as the Dot is, no technology product is without its challenges. One issue that Dot owners have occasionally run into is an error when trying to register the device to WiFi. In this article, I’ll show you how to fix this problem and properly register your Dot so you can use it.

Setting up your Echo Dot

A very common source of Echo Dot registration errors is an incorrectly completed setup routine. Before we get into the nitty-gritty of fixing a bug, let’s make sure your Dot is set up correctly first.

Setting up 1st and 2nd generation Echo Dot

1. Unpack your Echo Dot and download the Alexa app to your phone if it’s not already there.
2. Place the Echo Dot within range of your WiFi router and connect it. You should see the ring of light turn blue and then orange. You will then hear Alexa say hello.
3. Navigate to Settings in the Alexa app and select Wifi.
4. Select your WiFi network and select Connect.
5. Select Alexa devices from the app and select your Echo Dot.
6. Select Add Alexa device in Wi Fi network.
7. Press and hold the Action button on your Echo Dot until the light ring turns orange.
8. Select your WiFi from the list that appears in the Alexa app and enter the network password.
9. Save the password in the Alexa app.
10. Select Connect to join your Echo Dot to your WiFi network.

Setting up Echo Dot 3rd generation

Amazon made setting up the third-generation Dots much simpler.

1. Unpack your Echo Dot and download the Alexa app to your phone if it’s not already there.
2. Place the Echo Dot within range of your WiFi router and connect it. The light ring will rotate for approximately one minute. You will then hear Alexa say hello.
3. Open the Alexa app and follow the instructions to enter WiFi information.

That should be it for setting up the Echo Dot on your WiFi network. Your Dot should now know its own configuration details and will reconnect every time you turn it off and on or move it to another room in your house. Now you can place your Echo Dot anywhere within range of a good wireless signal in your home.

Fix Echo Dot Registration Device Errors

If your Dot was set up correctly, it should now work without any issues. If you’re having trouble, follow these troubleshooting steps to connect your Dot.

Reboot your router, reboot your point

The first thing you should try: turn it off and then turn it back on. Many software bugs are resolved by simply starting over. Restart your Dot and restart your router and see if that resolves the issue.

To reset the Echo Dot all you need to do is unplug it. Leave it unplugged for at least 10 seconds. Then plug it back in, wait for it to reboot, and see if the error has fixed itself.

If not, head to your router. Although other devices connected to the router may still work properly, there could be a connection issue. Press the reset button on your router until all the lights turn off. Wait for it to reboot and then check if the connection error has fixed itself. You can also unplug your router, leave it for more than ten seconds, and then plug it back in.

Cancel your point

When you order a new Echo Dot from Amazon, it is registered in your account before it is shipped from Amazon. However, if you purchased a used Dot, you will need to deregister it from the previous owner’s account before you can use it. Ideally, the original owner would cancel it before giving it to you, but that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes people forget or just decide it’s not their problem.

Here’s how to deregister your Echo Dot if you’re the original owner:

1. Visit the Amazon website and click on your account at the top. Then click on ‘Content and devices’.
2. Select Settings in the left menu and select the Echo Dot whose registration you want to unregister.
   
3. Select the Drop out button next to the point.
   
4. Select it again to confirm.

This frees up the Echo Dot so you can register it to someone else’s account. If you buy the Echo Dot secondhand and the original owner could not, or simply did not, deregister it, contact Amazon customer serviceand ask them to cancel it manually.

You can also unregister with the Alexa app by selecting Settings, Device settings, selectingthe name of the Echo Dot and scroll down toDrop out.

Once the Dot has been unregistered, you will need to manually set up the Echo Dot again as detailed above.

Sometimes the Echo Dot may be mistakenly reported as lost or stolen and will not allow you to register it. Contacting Amazon customer service through the link above should help you resolve it. This is another known issue, especially if a device is reported to have been lost in transit and then sold to an unwitting buyer.

Simplify the network

If device registration is not a problem, perhaps overlapping WiFi networks are. The Echo Dot sometimes has trouble differentiating between different WiFi channels or networks within the same property. One way to overcome this is to turn off all other networks or second channels while you register your Echo Dot. Once completed, you can turn them back on.
