There are several ways to record your screen, whether it is Windows, Mac or Linux. But no software comes close to OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) when it comes to smooth operation and reliability. Therefore, to make it easier for you, we have prepared a guide to explain how it works. Here are all the methods to record your screen with OBS.

Method 1: Record Screen with OBS on Windows

Let’s start with the most used platform, Windows. Since OBS has no restrictions on Windows, the steps are quite simple.

Install OBS on Windows

There are two ways to download and install OBS. Go to OBS official website and press the Windows button. Once this is done, follow the basic installation steps. You also can Go to the Microsoft Store and search for OBS Studio, which will give you an install button. Once you press the button, OBS will be automatically installed on your system.

Change OBS settings

After opening OBS, the first thing you need to do is adjust the recording settings. Here’s how it goes:

  1. First, click ‘Settings‘ at the bottom right of the OBS.

  1. Once done, click Production‘ in the sidebar and then search for ‘Recording‘ section.

  1. Now you can select the path of recording files from here by typing the path name or browsing the path location.

  1. You can also change the recording quality and recording format. But maintaining it as we suggest will do exactly the job.

  1. Once all the settings are done, click Apply and OK, and you’re done!

Start recording in OBS

  1. To start recording, you must first navigate to the scene section at the bottom left of your screen. By default, OBS adds a scene. If it’s not there, press the plus icon under the scene tab.

  1. It will open a large menu with many options. Select ‘Screenshot

  1. A new pop-up window will appear to confirm adding a new screenshot source. Give it whatever name you want and click ‘OK.’

  1. Once confirmed, it will show which screen you want to record. You can change the screen you want to capture if you have multiple screens. Choose the correct one and click ‘OK’ again.

  1. Now that you have selected a screen, navigate with the cursor to ‘start recording‘ at the bottom right and click once you’re ready.

Specific window capture

Additionally, OBS also introduced ‘Game Capture’ and ‘Window Capture’ for specific game screens or app screen recordings without displaying any crucial information on the screen. Learn how to configure it in this section.

1. To record only a specific game screen, click the game capture either Capture specific window option.

2. Then select the game you want to record and click start recording.

Similarly, you can use Window Capture for any application window in OBS without recording the entire screen.

Method 2: Record Screen with OBS on Mac

Recording screen on Mac via OBS is almost similar to Windows with slight restrictions. But don’t worry, as we have covered everything you need to know.

Before accessing the OBS download page on its official website, make sure you have macOS 11 or higher. Once you have that fixed, download the MacIntel version either Silicone version for Mac Apple and follow the installation steps.

To start recording your screen in OBS on Mac, follow these steps below:

  1. Start adding a new scene if it has already been added. Click on the ‘Further’ under the scene tab in the bottom left corner of OBS.

  1. Press ‘OK‘ to confirm adding the font.

  1. After confirming, select the screen you want to record and press ok.

  1. Once done, click the Start Recording button at the bottom right of OBS to record your screen.

  1. To change the file location of the recording, simply go to ‘Settings.’

Method 3: Record Screen with OBS on Linux

Using OBS on Linux comes with many complications. Follow the steps below to learn how to do it:

Install OBS on Linux

Before proceeding with the steps to record your screen, let’s discuss how to install OBS on Linux. OBS has official support in Flat pack and ubuntu. You can get the Flatpack version using the link here.

For Ubuntu users, if you have Ubuntu 20.04 or later installed, open your terminal and type the following to install it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
apt sudo update
sudo apt install ffmpeg obs-studio

Recording on Linux in OBS is quite similar to Windows with some small differences. Learn how to use it here:

  1. First, launch OBS, navigate to ‘Scene‘ and press the button ‘Further’ button to create a new scene.

  1. The menu will appear with an option called ‘The screenshot.’ This option is the same as ‘Screenshot‘ on Windows and Mac.

  1. If you have multiple screens, select the one you want to record and press ‘OK.’
