Something you’ll see on Twitter more than anywhere else are reaction GIFs, or GIFs that are used to respond to other messages and comments without typing any words. Twitter’s entire GIF search engine makes it easy to find the right GIF to send, whether in a direct message or a reply tweet to someone else in your feed, with easy categorical suggestions like Okay, Applause, High Five, and many more.
As expected, you’re bound to see a million GIFs on whatever platform you like. Unfortunately, keeping those Twitter GIFs on your computer or phone is harder than it should be. Right clicking on the desktop site shows the option to copy the GIF URL, but that’s all you get!
Why does Twitter make it so difficult to download and save GIFs for offline use? Is it possible to save GIFs from Twitter to your computer or smartphone? The answer is no, but you can still get your GIF image or download it as an mp4 video and keep it that way. Here’s how to download animated GIF images from Twitter.
Note: Remember, this is for animated GIFs on Twitter, not actual videos. It will say GIF in the bottom left corner of the still image. if you’re not already playing it.
Twitter GIFs are not real GIFs
Why can’t you save Twitter GIFs as an image file on your computer or smartphone, just like you would save a GIF on any other website? The answer may not seem obvious initially, but Any media other than a still photo on Twitter cannot be downloaded.
Instead, you may notice that GIFs on Twitter use an interface similar to a video platform, but are missing the play bar at the bottom of the screen. That’s why you can’t save your Twitter GIFs to your computer: they’re not GIFs at all. Instead, These are small video files where Twitter converted the animated GIF to a proprietary format to make it more efficient and provide a smoother Twitter experience.. On the other hand, you can also convert videos to post on Twitter.
So what does that mean for downloading GIFs from Twitter? The answer is to use a couple of third-party tools. While it’s not as simple as right-clicking on an image and saving it to your computer, it’s still a simple process. We’ll see.
Save a GIF from Twitter on Mac
The easiest way to save a GIF from Twitter is through a Mac. That is how!
- Open the “Cheep” on your Mac that contains the GIF you want to copy. You can use the feed, a post’s particular comment page, or the person’s reply page directly.
- Click with two fingers on the “GIF” then select “Copy GIF address.”
- Open a new tab by clicking “+” icon to the right of the current one at the top.
- Go to “https://twdownload.com/”, paste the copied “Twitter GIF” link into the “Video URL box”, and then click the “Download” button.
- On the new page, do a “two-finger tap” (ignore it says right-click) on “Download link”, then select Save link as…
- Name your file in the “Save As:” box, select the download location in the box “Where:” box, then click “Save.”
- Confirm that your download was successful.

- Click on “Browse” to search for the file you just downloaded.
- Select the downloaded video and click “Open” to add it to EZGIF.COM.

Just remember that reposting the GIF to Twitter will reconvert it to Twitter’s hybrid format, as it does with any animated GIF file.
Note: The reason you can’t use EZGIF alone is that your “Video to GIF (main tab) -> Video to GIF (secondary tab)” page generates errors or does nothing when you paste the Twitter link. What worked before no longer works. Therefore, you need to return to EZGIF to convert your mp4 to GIF.

Save a GIF from Twitter on Windows
Keeping Twitter GIFs on Windows is similar to Mac in that it uses a browser.
- Start the browser of your choice, open “Twitter,” and find the animated GIF image you want to download.
- Right click on the GIF and select “Copy GIF Address”.
- Open a new tab, navigate to “https://twdownload.com/” and paste the copied GIF link URL into the “Video URL box”. Select “Download” when ready.
- A new page opens. Right click on “Download Link”, then select “Save Link As…”
- Give your file a name or use the preselected one, then choose “Save.”
- Confirm that the download was successful.
- Go to “https://ezgif.com/” and click the “Video to GIF” link.
- Confirm that you are in the main “Video to GIF” tab and in the secondary one “Video to GIF” eyelash.
- Click “Choose File.”
- Find and select the “downloaded mp4 media file” (originally it was the Twitter GIF), then click “Open.”
- Select “Upload Video!” to convert the video from mp4 format to GIF once again.
Save a GIF to your phone
Unfortunately, keeping a Twitter GIF on your smartphone is more complicated than downloading it to your computer, largely thanks to the limitations of mobile operating systems. Still, some people depend on their smartphones for everything; Even Twitter is a better experience when it’s in your hand. We will use the Twitter app for Android, combined with a few other apps, to unblock GIF downloading on your device. We’ll see.
Save GIFs from Twitter using your mobile browser
The most natural solution is to copy the GIF, just like the method mentioned above. It’s not difficult to copy the video address within the Twitter app, and EZGIF has a mobile site that makes saving the GIF to your phone just as easy.
- Start by finding the GIF you want to save to your device.
- Click on the tweet (not the image) and it will open in a new page.
- Click on the “share” icon below the image.
- Select “Copy link.”
- Now it’s time to convert your Twitter image to mp4.. With the copied link, open your mobile browser and go to “https://twdownload.com.”
- Paste the copied URL into the “download box” and touch the “Arrow down” (download icon). Your file is converted to an mp4 video.
- On the same website, scroll down to see your converted video (GIF to mp4) on the screen. Play the “Download link” button.
- The mp4 appears in a browser window. press the “Play” to view it if you want, then tap the “vertical ellipsis” (three vertical dots) within the mp4, not the browser’s ellipsis.
- Choose “Download” from the options.
- Your mp4 should now appear in the “Downloads” folder of your Android device. Verify that it has downloaded successfully.
- Now it’s time to convert the mp4 to an animated GIF.. Open your mobile browser or a new tab and go to “EZGIF.com”. Touch one of the two “Video to GIF” Links.
- Scroll down the page and tap “Choose file.”
- In the “Choose an action” p at the bottom, select “Files”.
- Find and select your mp4 in the file explorer that appears. File Explorer should open on your “Recent” p, or you can browse “Downloads”.
- The screen returns to the “Video to GIF Converter” page with the “Upload Video File” option, but now it shows your file. Tap “Upload Video!” button at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll up on the newly loaded page to find your mp4 details and a preview. Tap “Convert to GIF!” to start the conversion process.
- Scroll down the page to the “GIF Output:” p. View the conversion results and tap the “save” button to download your newly animated GIF.
- Your animated Twitter image is now an animated GIF. Confirm that it is saved on your Android device using a file explorer. Feel free to change the file name.
Use dedicated apps for iOS and Android
In addition to the mobile site for EZGIF, you can install several non-website apps on iOS or Android to achieve the same. Apps support the ability to download and save content to your device instead of saving from the web browser, but using a web page is safer. Still, if you prefer a dedicated app that does the same job, there are tested and approved apps out there. Just be prepared for the announcements!
For Android, Tweet2GIF is an app that works very similar to EZGIF’s Video-to-GIF web app, but works as a dedicated app. One drawback of the app is the lower quality conversion, but overall it works great!
You only need to click the Convert button once to access your GIF, not convert it and then download it. Second, because it happens within your app’s interface, GIFs are easier to download and store than expected. You’ll find that the GIFs are a little lower quality than you’d want from the platform, but it’s a reliable app.
- Click on the “animated GIF” inside the associated tweet to open it in full screen.
- Tap on the “Share“Button at the bottom.
- Select “Copy link.”
- Visit “Tweet2GIF” from Play Store.
- Install and launch the app.
- Paste the Twitter GIF link you copied in steps 1-3 above.
- Click on the “Download GIF”To save a copy on your smartphone.
