Colin Farrell stars in this 8-part comedy as the titular private investigator, alongside Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell and Anna Gunn, and new episodes now air every Friday on Friday.
A black thriller? Black neon? The distinction would be essential for John Sugar, the charismatic private detective (played by Colin Farrell) hired to find Olivia, the missing granddaughter of a movie mogul.
No matter how much of a movie nerd PI is, movies are his thing. He is a man with artistic taste and passion, not just a difficult man to hire. According to Farrell, he is “a tender character… [who] He obviously lives in a world of darkness and crime and lives alone.”
But no matter what subgenre of film noir you want to place “Sugar” in, film noir has all the tropes of the hard-boiled detective story—internal turmoil, heavy drinking, one-liners, and casual violence—front and center. But what sets John apart from the private investigators before him is his self-awareness. He is obsessed with movies, a motif referenced in brief flashbacks in “Double Indemnity” and “The Big Heat.”
It shouldn’t work but it does. The rest take care of themselves as a sun-drenched California provides the backdrop and Farrell, channeling Bogart like a 21st-century Sam Spade, walks, talks and looks the part.
As secrets begin to be revealed and the façade of glamor and sophistication surrounding the movie business begins to peel away to reveal the ugly truth, it is the suave John Sugar who emerges from all of this as a genuine new hero of the small screen.
