The most successful team in the history of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) begins its campaign on Sunday when Egypt faces Mozambique in the opening Group B match for both teams.
The Mambas are yet to win in the AFCON in 12 matches, while Egypt are champions seven times and reached the final in 2021, losing to Senegal on penalties in Cameroon.
Much of the attention is likely to fall on Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah as the Liverpool striker begins the tournament for his country at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in the Ivorian city of Abidjan.
Egypt’s seven matches in AFCON 2021 yielded a total of six goals, and the prolific Salah will look for a more open encounter as he looks to improve on his personal total of two in those matches.

Mozambique mounts its first notable attack, Gildo Vilanculos advances down the left and sends a useful cross that the underdogs cannot hold on to.
He was immediately punished: Mostafa Mohamed ran into the penalty area at high speed on the other side and ended the break with a shot that Hernani Siluane deflected near the near post.

The Liverpool striker took aim but missed the ball inside the penalty area, inadvertently deflecting it towards Mostafa Mohamed on his right, who deflected beautifully off Edmilson Dove and fired a curling shot into the far corner of the net.
