What Jennifer Didthe new Netflix The true crime documentary surrounding convicted murderer Jennifer Pan quickly made its way into Netflix’s top 10 movies since its release last Wednesday (April 10). However, a new report from futurism reveals that the documentary may have used images of Pan that were manipulated by artificial intelligence.
Pan was convicted of conspiracy to kill her parents for hire in 2010, resulting in the death of her mother and serious injuries to her father, including a medically induced coma.
About 28 minutes into the film, viewers meet Pan’s high school friend Nam Nguyen, who remembers his relationship with Pan and says that “it was great talking to her.”
“Jennifer, you know, was cheerful, happy, confident and very genuine,” he explains, as three photographs of Pan appear in a row.
The last two images in particular have come under scrutiny: elements in the background of one image, in which Pan holds up two peace signs, appear distorted. His fingers and hands also seem altered.
In the third image, one of his front teeth appears much longer than the other, his left ear appears deformed, and his right cheek has a gap, according to PetaPixel.
According 404 MediaThe use of AI is also not acknowledged in the documentary’s credits.
Jugo Mobile reached out to Netflix for comment but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
This is certainly not the first time that enthusiastic observers have drawn attention to the use of AI in a film. Other projects have been criticized for their use of AI, such as Late night with the devilwhich hit theaters on March 22.
The directors finally confirmed Variety in an exclusive statement that they “experimented with AI for three still images that [they] They are further edited and eventually appear as very brief interstitials in the film.”
However, as Futurism reports, What Jennifer Did is a documentary, not a work of fiction, which makes the use of AI even more questionable, especially in its portrayal of Pan, who despite currently serving a life sentence in prison, may be eligible for parole. 25 years after his sentence was handed down.
