Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes II admitted to being one of the “older guys” in the locker room.
However, the 28-year-old quarterback continues to pile up accomplishments at an incredible rate heading into another appearance in the AFC championship game on Sunday. With a win in Baltimore on Sunday, Mahomes would be in position to lead the Chiefs to a third Super Bowl victory in five seasons.
At that rate, would Mahomes really be in a position to compete with Tom Brady? How long will Mahomes play in the NFL? He answered that question in an interview with Jugo Mobile on July 11.
“I want to play a lot more, especially at the quarterback position,” Mahomes told SN. “You have a chance to do that now and you see it in the league, but you have to keep the pedal down. You can’t slow down because guys are always coming in to try to win that championship. I want to try.” “I’ll do what I can to earn a little more.”
How much more can Mahomes accomplish? Is a run on Tom Brady, who won seven Super Bowls in a 23-year career with the Patriots and Buccaneers, possible? A look at Mahomes’ playoff record, AFC championship record and Super Bowl accomplishments heading into the AFC championship matchup against Baltimore.
How old is Patrick Mahomes?
Mahomes turned 28 on September 17, 2023. He was the No. 10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Mahomes has played seven seasons with Kansas City. He has the second-highest passer rating of all time among NFL quarterbacks at 103.5, just behind Aaron Rodgers at 103.6. Mahomes has 28,424 passing yards, 219 TDs and 63 interceptions.
Patrick Mahomes’ playoff record
Mahomes has a 13-3 playoff record, the best among active quarterbacks. He surpassed Aaron Rodgers – who is 11-10 – in leading the Chiefs to victories against the Dolphins and Bills in this year’s playoffs.
Mahomes has the highest winning percentage among quarterbacks with at least 13 playoff wins. With a win against Baltimore, Mahomes would move into a four-way tie with Terry Bradshaw, John Elway and Peyton Manning with 14 playoff wins.
The only quarterbacks with more are Tom Brady (35-13) and Joe Montana (16-7).

Patrick Mahomes’ AFC Championship Record
Mahomes is winning his sixth AFC championship. He is 3-2 in the AFC championship game, but is ahead of the pace Tom Brady set during his career, according to Sportico’s Lev Akabas:
Patrick Mahomes is 28 years old and will play in his sixth AFC championship on Sunday, seeking his 14th playoff victory.
By the time he was 34, Tom Brady had only played in 4 AFC championships and won 12 playoff games.
– Lev Akabas (@LevAkabas) January 26, 2024
Brady was 10-4 in conference championship games. That’s twice as many appearances as the next quarterbacks, Roger Staubach (5-2) and Joe Montana (4-3). Steve Young made seven conference championship appearances, but went 1-3 as a starter and was Montana’s backup in three of those games.
Mahomes is tied with John Elway (5-1) and Terry Bradshaw (4-2) with six AFC championship game appearances.
The Chiefs have won the AFC championship in six consecutive seasons. Brady led the Patriots to eight consecutive AFC championship games from 2011 to 2018.
Patrick Mahomes’ Super Bowl record
Mahomes is 2-1 in the Super Bowl and is one of 13 quarterbacks with multiple Super Bowl wins. He can become the eighth quarterback to advance to a fourth Super Bowl if the Chiefs beat the Ravens on Sunday.
Four quarterbacks have at least three Super Bowl wins as starters. That list includes Brady, Montana, Bradshaw and Troy Aikman.
A look at when those quarterbacks won their second and third Super Bowls shows Mahomes’ impressive record.
| PLAYER | S.B. | AGE 2nd SB | AGE 3. SB |
| Tom Brady | 7 | 26 | 27 |
| Troy Aikman | 3 | 27 | 29 |
| Patrick Mahomes | 2 | 27 | ? |
| Terry Bradshaw | 4 | 27 | 30 |
| joe montana | 4 | 28 | 32 |
QB with two Super Bowls and two MVPs
Mahomes is one of four quarterbacks to have won multiple Super Bowls and NFL MVP awards. He has two Super Bowl rings and two NFL MVP awards.
That group includes Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Joe Montana. A look at how Mahomes stacks up in that conversation:
| Quarterback | S.B. | MVP | SB + MVP |
| Tom Brady | 7 | 3 | 10 |
| Peyton Manning | 2 | 5 | 7 |
| joe montana | 4 | 2 | 6 |
| Patrick Mahomes | 2 | 2 | 4 |
Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady Super Bowls
When Brady retired after the 2022 season, it was unthinkable that any quarterback could achieve seven Super Bowl championships and 10 appearances.
However, Mahomes is giving us something to think about. If Mahomes leads Kansas City past the Ravens, he would then have four Super Bowl appearances in his first seven seasons, one of which he spent as a backup.
If Mahomes wins a third Super Bowl this season and can match Brady’s longevity, then in theory he would need four Super Bowls in 16 seasons to tie Brady. The fact that this is a conversation speaks to how incredible Mahomes has been to this point in his career.
