Manchester City look to chase Liverpool at the top of the Premier League when they host Burnley in the domestic league on Wednesday.
The Reds have a five-point lead at the top of the standings, but Manchester City have a game in hand and are therefore just one result away from taking control of the title fight.
All eyes will be on Pep Guardiola’s team as Erling Haaland and John Stones aim to return to the team. Haaland has missed 13 games and 53 days of action with a foot injury and, although he may not be ready to start, he could feature from the bench. Stones, meanwhile, has not started since early December amid an injury-plagued campaign, but came off the bench against Spurs in the FA Cup in midweek and could be set for a full return from his ankle problem. .
His return coincides with the recent addition of Kevin de Bruyne to the squad, after the Belgian scored a goal and assisted off the bench against Newcastle two weeks ago after missing the entire first half of the campaign.
Burnley have found themselves at the center of the relegation battle this season, as former Manchester City stalwart Vincent Kompany’s magic from last year’s promotion has seemingly run out this year. They have begun to show signs of a turnaround with eight points gained since the beginning of December, but face a daunting task here against a team that won the second leg convincingly 3-0 to open the season in August.

Burnley have done well to steal results from more forgiving teams, but they will be punished by Man City, who are one of the most ruthless teams in Europe. Vincent Kompany’s side picked up points against Fulham and Brighton in December despite being battered at times, and came close to getting results against Liverpool and Aston Villa.
However, against Manchester City, every mistake can be punished. In their opening defeat of the season to City at Turf Moor, Pep Guardiola’s side were good enough to achieve a significant margin of victory, scoring their three goals on 17 shots worth 2.08 xG, against the six attempts by Burnley and one on goal.
Kompany’s men will have a chance to pick up points and climb out of the relegation zone, but against a Manchester City team that is regaining form and fitness, now will not be the time.
