Although The breakfast club has established itself as a staple of ’80s cinema, one of its stars once again draws attention to a part of the film that hasn’t aged too well.
While I was talking to him United Kingdom The timesMolly Ringwald, who played “Princess” Claire Standish in the John Hughes film, shared that she had seen the film recently and noted that she “only rewatched” the film because her eldest daughter, Mathilda, “wanted to watch it with [her]”, according to Deadline.
“There are a lot of things I really love about the movie, but there are elements that haven’t aged well, like Judd Nelson’s character, John Bender, who essentially sexually harasses my character,” he said. “I’m glad we can look at that and say things are really different now.”
Ringwald recently voiced a similar complaint about the film during a February 6 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Showwhen he mentioned the important “conversations” he had after watching the film with his twins Adele and Roman, noting “what they disagreed with and what they didn’t.”
“The fact that I was basically, my character, was sexually harassed throughout the process and then I go for him at the end. They didn’t understand it at all,” he recalled. “I was very glad that they didn’t like it, that it didn’t turn my daughter on.”
He also delved into the film’s problematic themes in “What’s Up with The breakfast club?”, which was published in The New Yorker in 2018. In the article, he talks about showing the film to his daughter when she was 10 and reflects on the experience of watching these scenes in the context of the #MeToo movement.
The film’s cast was completed by Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall and Emilio Estevez, who play high school students from different groups caught in detention on a Saturday.
