While it’s no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going through a rough patch, it could soon see the return of a fan-favorite character: Wong, the MCU’s current Sorcerer Supreme. Details remain scarce, but Benedict Wong has said there is “something looming” regarding his character’s return.
“I can’t really say. It’s been a while,” Wong said. ComicBook.com at the red carpet premiere of her latest project, Netflix’s “3 Body Problem.” “Something is coming. Something is coming.”
Of course, that’s not much to go on, but his response is particularly surprising because Disney has been silent about the future of Doctor Strange since “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” hit theaters in 2022 to lackluster reviews. In the two years since then, Disney hasn’t released any new updates about Doctor Strange 3.
So where could Wong appear soon in the MCU? That’s the million dollar question. As the Sorcerer Supreme, a role Wong took on after Thanos captured Doctor Strange in “Avengers: Infinity War,” he certainly occupies an important place in the MCU. And that brings great potential for appearances in other MCU films and series, possibly even his own spin-off.
The most likely candidate for Wong’s return would, of course, be Doctor Strange 3. The end of the trilogy, while not yet confirmed, is almost certain given the popularity of the character and the suspense left in “Multiverse of Madness.” The film introduced the idea of incursions into the MCU, or collisions between two realities in the multiverse, often with catastrophic results.
A post-credits scene also showed off a new character: Clea, the current Sorceress Supreme in the comics and Strange’s ex-wife, played by Charlize Theron. In Doctor Strange 3, we got to see Wong stay behind to protect Earth while the good doctor is doing damage control on a raid.
Another possibility could be the rumored Strange Academy series that Marvel has in the works. In the comics, Strange Academy is a sort of spin on Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, where students are taught to control magic instead of their mutant powers. In the final moments of “Multiverse of Madness,” Wong took América Chávez (Xochitl Gómez) under her wing to train her in the ways of all things mystical. So it’s possible that Wong is referring to her work on a Strange Academy spin-off series where she trains a new generation of young magic users.
Marvel had already begun reshuffling its slate of upcoming Marvel movies and TV shows once “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” bombed by critics and fans alike. But those plans appear to have accelerated after Jonathan Majors, who plays Kang, the planned main villain for the next phase of the MCU, was found guilty of third-degree reckless assault and guilty of harassment. Marvel cut ties with Majors following the verdict, which, combined with several high-profile flops, has the company working on a major MCU reboot.
A project like Strange Academy could inject new blood into the MCU, introducing a host of new and/or obscure characters from the comics that fans would fall in love with. After all, it worked with “Deadpool” and Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
