Have you ever tried to play a game on your PC that was a little more than your graphics card could handle? Instead of seeing panoramic views, you got pixelated edges and blocky shapes. These “ribs” are usually eliminated by increasing the screen resolution.
But that is not possible for everyone.
So if you have an older GPU or are simply playing on a rig that isn’t designed for gaming, here’s some bad news: you can’t reach high-resolution textures without compromising in the form of a drastic slowdown in your game.

What is smoothing?
Anti-aliasing is a way for your computer to play nice with all those pixels in PC games and smooth them into graphics worthy of this century. In short, it is a graphics setting that helps eliminate irregularities.
If you’re running a game at a higher resolution, you’re in luck. You probably don’t know what a “jaggie” is or have seen one. But some players have to make do with what they have and that can mean a poor platform for high-demand games.
Think about it this way…
Game images are created by stacking and aligning square pixels. When you don’t have a high enough resolution, you may see jagged or jagged edges of images. Officially, it’s called “aliasing,” but players like “jaggies” and the “ladder effect” better. It’s easier to remember.
Then, along comes the anti-aliasing setting in your PC’s viewport to take care of this visual monstrosity. There are a couple of ways a PC can handle anti-aliasing:
Types of smoothing
Now that we’ve covered what it is, let’s go over the two types of smoothing you need to know about.
Spatial antialiasing
When you have a low-resolution image full of irregularities, spatial smoothing works to fill in the gaps created by that low resolution and eliminate that jagged staircase appearance.
It takes color samples from leftover pixels of a higher resolution image, creates samples, and downsamples them to the original resolution. The result is an image with pixel colors averaged from high-resolution pixels that blend those rough edges and make them less visible.
Post-process antialiasing
With the post-processing anti-aliasing method, anti-aliasing occurs after the image is rendered and blurs the perceived edges. While post-process smoothing can remove some of those irregularities, it tends to make images look blurry. And the more detailed your game is, the more likely you are to notice it.
However, since the GPU determines where to blur after rendering an image, this happens very quickly and with less effort on the processor. So it really depends on the player and what they prefer to commit to.
What is anti-aliasing in Minecraft?
Minecraft’s design supposedly dates back to the pixelated heroes of the first games. The blocky scenes and characters are drawn that way on purpose. But using aliases can cause some unintentional irregularity in the pixelated world of Minecraft.
If you have a Windows 10 or VR edition of Minecraft, there’s a simple fix waiting for you on the Options screen. As of update 0.15.0, these editions of Minecraft have an anti-aliasing feature. Just keep in mind that any AA function puts a strain on your processor. And of course there is the blur factor.

Aliasing or “jagged” occurs when curved lines are rendered in PC games and look like a set of stairs. Hence the term “toothed” due to its serrated edges. On a high-resolution screen, you will not notice irregularities because the high number of pixels makes them less noticeable.

However, on low-resolution displays, there aren’t enough pixels to soften those lines. And what should be smooth, curved lines become stacks of Lego-like stairs.
However, having high resolution output is not the complete answer.
If you run games at 120 FPS, the image may look sharp and clear, but you are sacrificing processing power. And if your processing hardware doesn’t match your resolutions, you’ll encounter drastic slowdowns to the point of making your games difficult to play.
The solution to jaggies with minimal impact on the processor is smoothing. Yes, there are some disadvantages to using this method, such as blurring and reduced processing power. But it can still have significantly less impact on performance than running the game at the highest graphics settings.
What is anti-aliasing in Photoshop?
Aliasing doesn’t just happen in PC games. You can also see it when you use low resolution images in Photoshop. That irregular, staircase-like contour around the edges of a smooth image is called aliasing. And Photoshop has a solution for that too.
To use the smoothing option, follow the steps below:
- Go to the options bar and select Anti-aliasing.

- Choose your tool in the Edit workspace (Lasso, Magic Wand, and Elliptical Marquee work with Anti-aliased)

- Select the image in the image window.

- Blur edges by tapping with the left mouse button or use long strokes by holding down the left mouse button

Anti-aliasing only works on the edges of an image. If you need to soften edges within an image, you can use feathering to blur some of those rough edges.
What is anti-aliasing in Illustrator?
The anti-aliasing option in Illustrator is available when exporting images to the web. when you choose Save for Web, an Art Optimized drop-down menu will be available. In it you have three options:
- None: Does not apply anti-aliasing to the image.
- Optimized Art: Applies anti-aliasing or blurring around any art in the image.
- Optimized Text: Applies anti-aliasing or feathering around any text on the image.
Unfortunately, you can’t apply anti-aliasing to an image you’re working on in Illustrator. But most of the time it’s not necessary because the lines appear smooth as you work on them.
What is an antialiasing filter?
Anti-aliasing is a term used for different things.
For example, in digital signal processing, it refers to an analog filter that only lets in a certain sample of the desired frequency range.
The term is also used in photography. But in this case, it is an optical low-pass filter or OLPF that sits on top of a camera’s image sensor. Its main task is to filter out interference patterns that can potentially spoil images. Like game resolution and photo editing software, this filter softens fine details. However, instead of edges, an in-camera anti-aliasing filter seeks to blur the details of high-frequency patterns to avoid moiré patterns.
What is antialiasing in Genshin Impact?
In the Settings menu GraphicsYou can choose between three anti-aliasing options in Genshin Impact:
- None – no anti-aliasing elements in the game
- TSAA – temporary alias that looks at pre-rendered frames instead of a single image
- SMAA – post-processing anti-aliasing method that detects and applies filters

As a general rule, you’ll want to keep your graphics settings at SMAA yes you can. This setting gives you the best graphics when playing Genshin Impact. However, if you notice an FPS drop, you can go down to TSAA. However, the difference isn’t very noticeable during combat, so if you’re looking for performance, you might want to turn it off completely.
