After a storied career spanning from bottle rocket to asteroid city, Beloved author Wes Anderson finally took home an Oscar for his live-action short film. The wonderful story of Henry Sugar. The only problem? He wasn’t actually at the 2024 Academy Awards to pick up the hardware. Presenters Issa Rae and Ramy Youssef accepted the Oscar on Wes Anderson’s behalf, sparking a firestorm of confusion online about why the winner didn’t show up. I was sick? Working hard on something new? Or, as some Oscar watchers on Twitter, aka X, opined, was he simply irritated by the fact that his feature film from last year, asteroid citywas snubbed?!?
Even Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about Anderson’s absence. Kimmel joked, “The reason Wes couldn’t be here tonight is because he’s at home making a diorama made out of corduroy.” CORDUROY! Get it, because Anderson is known for the cheesy style of it.
So what’s the real reason Wes Anderson didn’t show up to collect his first Oscar? Could it simply be that after so many nominations, so few wins, and so little love for Asteroid City, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar Did the director just not want to bother applying to the Academy? That was the theory circulating on social media!

And journalist and film critic Daniel Howat noted that “Wes Anderson is the first person to win Best Live Action Short Film AFTER being nominated for Best Director.”
Best Live Action Short Film is, in fact, a category that generally opens the doors for emerging writers, directors and filmmakers to move into the big leagues. So it’s possible that Anderson (who had so far been nominated six times for his work on The Real Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kindgomand The Grand Budapest Hotel.
So perhaps Anderson was so offended by the Academy’s past snubs that he didn’t attend this year’s ceremony. Or maybe he just came down with the flu or had something more important to do.
As it happens, that’s exactly what happened.
Shortly after the conclusion of this year’s Oscars ceremony, E.W. confirmed that Wes Anderson skipped this year’s event because he literally started production on his next project early Monday morning.
So no bad feelings or conspiracies. The man simply cannot be stopped!
