YouTube added a dark mode, called Dark Theme, to its website last year, which helps users limit the amount of white/blue light that reaches their eyes while browsing videos late at night, and now too It is available in its mobile application. .
Google first added the dark theme to the iOS version of the app and simply promised that it will come to the Android version “soon.” This is not unheard of: despite having Android, Google often tests new apps on iOS first, as it did with Gboard.
YouTube Dark Mode: How to Enable Dark Mode on YouTube (and Turn It Off Later)
To enable Dark Theme on iOS, all you need to do is make sure you have installed the latest version of the app and you will see a shortcut to enable it on the home screen.
- Turn it on and off by tapping your account thumbnail in the top right corner and then opening the Settings menu.

- In Settings, toggle the Dark Theme switch accordingly.

When you exit the Settings menu, you will immediately notice that the white background is replaced with a black one which is much more pleasing to the eye. Unfortunately, there’s no option to automate dusk mode like in the Twitter app, so you’ll have to manually turn it on every time you want to dim or brighten it.

If you found this page because you want to enable the dark theme on the web version of YouTube, the good news is that it’s an equally simple tweak. From any page, simply click on your account thumbnail in the top right corner, then click on Dark Theme and toggle it to On. The settings are specific to the browser you are using, so if you want to use them all the time, you will have to change them in each browser you use.
As soon as Dark Theme is added to the Android YouTube app, we’ll update this page with the appropriate instructions for enabling it, but it will likely involve the same steps as outlined above for the iOS app.
With a bit of luck, the Android version might also include the option to automate the Dark Theme at sunrise and sunset.
