Discord is more than just VoIP for gamers in the middle of an epic raid or battle royale. It is a service that allows server owners to keep track of all their members and provide them with a place to socialize verbally and textually.
No communication platform would be complete without emojis. Text-based conversations can be complicated without context or inflection. That’s where these little icons come into play. With emoji you can add emotions to your messages. But they are also fun.

Use emojis in discord
To get started, we’ll show you how to add an emoji to your messages. Discord offers a standard list of emojis like most other platforms.
Open Discord and navigate to the text or message channel you want to use. So, simply hover your mouse over the grayed out emoji on the right side of the text bar:
It will go from gray to full color while floating. Click the emoji icon to open a list of available emojis at your fingertips. If you want to delete more than one, you can long press the button Change key while clicking.

The Wumboji
A Wumboji is an emoji that has been given too much room to grow. By foregoing any text and instead dropping a single emoji as a message, that emoji will grow in size for everyone to see.
You are limited to up to 27 Wumboji in a single message before overcrowding becomes a concern and the size is reduced to its original state.
While in compact mode, emojis cannot be converted to Wumbojis. This makes some sense since a compacted Wumboji is already what an emoji is.
Custom Server Emoji
In addition to the basic, ready-to-use emojis that are automatically gifted to you, you can also easily add custom emojis to your server. You can also sync with some of your favorite streamers to use their emojis too.
If you’re subscribed to any partner Twitch streamers who have their own set of custom emojis enabled for their channel, you can use them on your server. All you need to do is sync your Twitch account with Discord. This will allow you to use your custom emojis on any server you decide to join. Impressive huh?
Of course, you can always upload your own custom emojis, designed explicitly for your server, to use as well. To do this you will need:
- Go to the “Server Settings” tab. To do this, click on the server name and select the tab from the drop-down options provided.
- Once there, you will find the Emoji tab. Click on it to open the Server Emoji dialog box.
This is where you will be greeted with the text “Don’t let your memes be dreams.” As long as you are the server owner or have been given the necessary Manage Emoji permission, you will have full access to the Emoji tab.
- From here, click the upload button on the right and you’ll be able to upload your own custom emoji stash to the server.
You are limited to 50 emoji uploads per server and those particular emojis will only work for the server they were uploaded to. If you try to use an emoji that was uploaded to a different server, you will receive a message from Clyde:
Emojis can only be used on the server for which they were created. Unless, of course, you’re paying for Discord Nitro.
In the screenshots above, the first one is for when you try to type the emoji by name, and the last message is received if it is chosen from the selection list. You may notice that some servers will display both grayed out and universal emojis. Just keep in mind that manually uploaded emojis are server-specific, but built-in ones are not. This includes any emoji you sync through Twitch.
Emojis resize to 32×32 pixels and the upload should not exceed 128×128 pixels for optimal resolution. The server automatically sorts the list of custom emojis so you won’t have trouble finding the emoji you’re looking for.
React to messages with emojis
Sometimes less is more when it comes to responding to a message. It’s often possible to create a better emotional display of support by opting for a reaction instead of words or a manually placed emoji. Discord gives you the option of a quick reply via the “Add Reactions” button.
To use a reaction, click the + emoticon to the right of the message. It will be located next to the menu icon.
Simply click on it and you will be given your full set of emoticons to choose from so you can quickly convey your response.
If one reaction isn’t enough, you can add more, as the “Add Reactions” button will now be located to the right of your current reaction emotes.
Similar to the quick treatment above, you can hold down the Shift key while selecting gestures to keep the window open.
You also have the option to delete a reaction if you wish. Simply click on the submitted reaction box and it will simply disappear. Most used emojis are also saved for quick reaction. Right click on the message you want to react to and all your favorites will be there for easy use.
If you want to know what other members think about your emoji, right click on the message, in the dialog box is the “Reactions” tab. Click on it and a menu will open detailing who gave which reaction gesture.
Add emojis to channel description and nicknames
Maybe you want to add some emojis to some of your channels or even your nickname. The process is quite simple and there are two ways to do it. The most technical way is to type the full emoji ID name (:emoji name 🙂directly.
An example would be to write :flame: to produce the ? emojis.
This is a language known as Unicode. There are probably quite a few sites online to choose from that can help you find all the emojis you need. Many users choose to use the site. getemoji.com. From the site, all you’ll have to do is locate the emoji you want to use, highlight it, right-click and choose Copy. Then paste it into Discord wherever you need it. If you are using the Unicode site, when choosing which emoji to use, make sure you copy it from the Browser column.
