How to delete a default theme in Messenger

Personalizing your Messenger chats can add some flavor to a plain white background. Messenger allows you to choose between different themes, colors and gradients. These can all be fun ways to personalize your chats.

But what about changing the theme to the default option? This article will show you how to delete a topic in Messenger.

Revert the theme to default settings on desktop

If you have chosen a color theme that you want to change, here are some steps to choose the default color:

1. Open Messenger on the desktop.
2. Under “Chats,” choose the conversation you want to change.
   
3. Select “Change Theme.”
   
4. Choose the “Classic” blue color theme (the seventh color from the back).
   
5. Select “Save” at the bottom.
   

Please note that you cannot see the theme preview on the desktop. As such, it may be difficult to identify the original color. You can scroll down and look for the solid blue color.

Monochrome theme

When changing the theme in Messenger, you may come across the monochrome theme. It is important to note that this is not the default theme and you do not remove the previous color by selecting it.

When you select this color, the chat will have a white background with gray text bubbles. Although it may seem like it, this is not the default theme. The classic theme should have a white background with blue text bubbles.

Word effects added with themes

When you choose certain themes, they have word effects. This means that when you type a certain keyword in chat, the word will be sent differently than other words. For example, when you choose the astrology theme in Messenger, words like “zodiac”, “horoscope”, “cosmos” will have an effect with the corresponding emojis when you send them.

Word effects are available in the mobile app. This is how you can check which words have effects in Messenger:

1. Go to “Chats.”
   
2. Tap “View Profile.”
   
3. Tap “Word Effects.”
   
4. See which words work for word effects.
   
5. Write that word in the chat and it will have a special effect.
   

Different words work with different themes, so check which ones they are by changing the theme, repeating the steps above and have fun seeing the different effects.

Choose your own words for word effects

If the topic you’ve chosen doesn’t have words or phrases sent with effects, you can write your own. This is a really fun way to make a chat more personal with your friends, family, and colleagues.

Here’s how to add your own words and phrases that have special effects in the app:

1. Go to “Chats.”
   
2. Tap “View Profile.”
   
3. Tap “Word Effects.”
   
4. Type a word or phrase you want.
   
5. Tap the emoji on the left.
   
6. Choose an emoji that goes with the word.
   
7. Tap the arrow on the right.
   

Now, every time you or the other person in the chat types the word or phrase you selected, it will take effect. You will both see the emoji you have chosen appear all over the screen. Anyone in the chat can use, add or remove these word effects.

Does deleting the chat revert the issue?

You may be tempted to simply delete the chat to quickly change the topic. Doing so may appear to revert the theme to the default blue. But this is not the answer to your question. You can check it by sending a message to the chat. You will immediately see the previous topic that was selected before deleting the conversation.

All previous settings such as word effects and theme will be restored once you send a message. You can always change the theme back to the default classic by following the steps mentioned above.
