There are several different ways to add friends to your friends list. You can search for them using their username and player tag if you know it. There is also the possibility of adding a friend through their profile, as well as through the context menu. In this article, we’re going to break down each of them, as well as what you can find using the Friends list window.
Discord Friends List Window
Having friends added to your Friends List means you won’t have to share a server to send direct messages, create group chats, or check their online status. You will have direct access to each of these things right there in the Friends Window.
To access your friends list window:
- While you’re logged into Discord, click the Discord icon at the top left of the screen (this should appear above the list of servers you’re involved with).
- From the Discord menu, click on the Friends icon located to the right of the server list.

Once you have friends added, you can sort them all through the Friends List window. There are a few tabs to swap depending on how you want the list to display:

- ALL – This tab will show each of your friends currently added to your list.
- ONLINE – This shows you each and every one of your friends on the list who are currently online, including those who may be inactive.
- EARRING – All friend requests you have received will be saved here. You can scroll and accept or reject until you are satisfied.
- BLOCKED – All users you have blocked will appear here.
Technically, only those you’re willing to call “friends” will be found in the “Online” or “Everyone” tabs. When looking at the lists, the information is pided into three columns:

- NAME – The friend’s username (not to be confused with their full tag).
- STATE – You will find their online status and the game they are currently playing in this column.
- MUTUAL SERVERS – If you share a server with one of your friends, the server name will appear here. Your window may need to be expanded if the mutual servers do not appear.
You can open a DM with one of your friends by clicking on the horizontal bar that appears while you hover over one of them. Additionally, if you share a server, you can click on the server name to go directly to that server’s #general channel.
