Instagram direct messages don’t offer anything other chat apps don’t, but the service is built into the app and allows you and your friends to have a dialogue focused on image posts without switching apps.

How to send a direct message to friends and followed profiles using your mobile on Instagram

1. Open the instagram app, then sign in if necessary.
   
2. Select the paper airplane icon (messages) at the top right of the app. This action opens Instagram Direct. If you have a DM waiting for you, there will be a number at the top of the icon.
   
3. Play the profile icon you want to send a message to, or tap the edit icon (pencil and paper) in the upper right corner to write the username of someone who is not on your friends list.
   
4. To add an image from your device’s gallery, tap the image (square with mountains and sun) to the right before typing the message, or the option will disappear.
